How-to Tip: The Laundromat

Problem: Having to carry a bottle of liquid laundry detergent with you which is heavy and can spill or leak, or having to carry a box of powdered laundry detergent with you which is also heavy, and is even more likely to spill.

Solution: Buy a large box or even a 5 gallon bucket (from Sam’s Club?) of powdered laundry detergent and a box of sandwich sized Ziploc® bags. If you are planning on doing a maximum of three loads, for example, take three of the Ziploc bags, and put one scoop full of powdered detergent in each. Place the Ziploc bags on the top of your dirty clothes in the same container that you use to carry them to the laundromat in, and leave the rest of the laundry detergent at home! Bring the empty Ziploc bags back home to be refilled and used again.

Problem: Having to carry a bottle of liquid bleach with you, which is heavy and can spill or leak and ruin your clothes, or a box of powdered bleach, which is also heavy, and is even more likely to spill.

Solution: Buy the type of powdered laundry detergent that contains color safe bleach.

Problem: Using the same container to carry your laundry back home as you used to carry your dirty laundry in, thus making your clean clothes dirty again.

Solution: Use a cloth laundry bag and launder it along with everything else. I use a pillowcase for this purpose, which eliminates the need to launder something extra.

Problem: Some laundromat machines work better than others.

Solution: Don’t be shy. Ask questions of the other patrons. By asking questions and by “keeping my ears peeled,” I found out about two driers that go for twice as long as the others.

Problem: Clothes get wrinkled on the way home.

Solution:

1. Buy a rod designed to be placed between the clothes hanging hooks in the back seat of your car. (Wal-Mart carries them.)

2. Remove the back seat of your car and put it into storage. This will allow the clothes to hang from the newly purchased rod without bunching up on the bottom because they touch the seat. (Although optional, this step is highly recommended. I did it, and I’m glad that I did. The extra space is also very handy for hauling things.)

3. Put your clothes on hangers, and hang them up on the rod in the back seat of your car. Make sure that there is plenty of room in between each article of clothing.

Another advantage of this system is that the clothes can still be slightly damp as they will quickly dry out on the hangers with the result that they will be even more wrinkle free than if they were allowed to get completely dry in the drier.
