Halvah, a delicious sweet preparation requiring only 3 non-optional ingredients, can be included with a meal or served separately, as a dessert. There is a tendency to make it’s preparation time consuming and complicated, but, if you use this method, it’s very quick and easy.

(Makes 1 or 2 servings)

1. Place 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) of butter (preferably unsalted) in a 4 cup (1 quart) microwavable, disposable bowl, preferably clear glass.

2. Add ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon or apple pie spice.1 (optional)

3. Microwave until the butter melts.

4. If spices were added in step #2 above, then rock the bowl from side to side until the spices are wet with butter.

5. Add ⅓ cup of farina.2

6. Rock the bowl from side to side until all of the farina is wet with butter.

7. Microwave on high for 1½ minutes.

8. Add 1 cup of water, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of fruit juice, 1 cup of water mixed with ⅓ cup of powdered milk, ¼ cup of water mixed with ¾ cup (½ of a 12 ounce can) of evaporated milk or approximately ⅓ of a 13.5 ounce can of coconut milk with enough water added to make 1 cup.

9. Add 2 or 3 heaping spoonfuls of peanut butter.3 (optional)

10. Add up to ¼ cup of sugar.4 (optional)

11. Microwave on high for 1½ minutes. (2 minutes if the liquid added in step #8 was refrigerated)

12. Add such things as strawberry jam, frozen blueberries, shredded coconut, golden raisins , dried apples and/or banana slices.4

13. If any frozen fruit was added, microwave on high for 30 seconds. (optional)

14. Mix thoroughly.

15. May be served warm, cold or at room temperature.

1 You can purchase apple pie spice at your local grocery store, or you can make it yourself: 8 parts ground cinnamon, 4 parts ground nutmeg, 2 parts ground allspice and 1 part ground cloves.

2 The farina (cream of wheat) can be instant, quick, original, 1 minute, 2½ minute or 10 minute cook time, but the price quoted above is based upon a 28 ounce box of Wal-Mart’s Great Value® brand “Quick Farina Hot Cereal” (2½ minute) @ US$2.18, which works just fine. Instant oatmeal, instant grits, or even flaxseed meal could be substituted for the farina, but be very careful doing step #7 lest the grains get scorched and doing step #11 lest the preparation boil over.

3 The addition of peanut butter not only makes the preparation more tasty, but it also creates a complete protein by adding a member of the pea/bean family (peanuts are legumes, not nuts) to the grain (whole wheat farina).

4 If I add strawberry jam in step #12, then I don't add any sugar, otherwise, I only add 2 tablespoons of sugar, but I also add a generous amount of peanut butter, some golden raisins and some shredded coconut.
