| Home | “A great substitute for American style cheese is 4 ounces (½ of an 8 ounce block) of cream cheese.” |
In order to prepare this recipe, you will need a 4 cup (1 quart) microwavable bowl.
(Makes 1 or 2 servings)
1. Add ¼ teaspoon of salt to a 4 cup microwavable bowl.
2. Add ¼ teaspoon of asafeotida (available from East Indian grocery stores). (optional)
3. Add 2 teaspoons of curry powder.¹
4. Rock the bowl from side to side in order to distribute the salt and spices somewhat evenly.
5. Using your fingers, break off small pieces from a solid block of American style cheese, such as Kraft™ Velveeta,™ placing them into a measuring cup until the pieces rise to the 1 cup mark.²
6. Add the cheese to the 4 cup microwavable bowl.
7. Add ½ cup of water or ¾ cup of evaporated milk.
8. Microwave on high until the mixture starts to boil. (Approximately 1½ minutes.)
9. Add 2 cups of cold cereal such as Rice Chex™ or wheat bran flakes (Add 3 cups instead of 2 if you use puffed rice or puffed wheat.)
10. Mix thoroughly. (Mixture may seem too liquidy, but it will thicken as it cools.)
¹ I make my own curry powder by mixing the following five spices: 3 parts ground coriander, 1 part turmeric powder, 1 part ground cumin, 1 part ground fenugreek and 1 part ground red chili beans.
² A great substitute for American style cheese is 4 ounces (½ of an 8 ounce block) of cream cheese. Another great substitute is a package (4 tablespoons) of powdered cheese from a box of, for example, “Kraft™ Macaroni & Cheese Dinner.” (No need to add any milk, margarine, or additional butter.)
