This recipe, according to the “P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor” (US$19.89), requires 0.08 kilowatt-hours of electricity to prepare. This is less than one penny’s worth of electricity!

Don’t let the simplicity of this recipe fool you. It’s incredibly delicious, and it’s a complete, well-balanced meal for 1 or 2 people.

1. Add ½ teaspoon of salt to a 6 or 7 cup microwavable bowl.

2. Add ½ teaspoon of powdered basil. (optional)

3. Add ½ teaspoon of powdered ginger. (optional)

4. Add ¼ teaspoon of asafeotida (available from East Indian grocery stores). (optional)

5. Add 1 heaping teaspoon of curry powder¹.

6. Rock the bowl from side to side until the salt and the spices are distributed somewhat evenly.

7. Add 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) of butter.

8. Microwave until the butter is completely melted.

9. Rock the bowl from side to side until the salt and the spices are wet with melted butter.

10. Add 2 cups of cold cereal such as wheat flakes, corn flakes, crispy rice or toasted oats.

11. Pour, as evenly as possible, a 15 oz. can of vegetables such as green string beans, sweet peas, diced potatoes, diced tomatoes, whole kernel corn, or sliced carrots (including the liquid) on top of the cereal.

12. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

13. Mix thoroughly.

14. If there is still liquid present, mix in ¼ cup of instant mashed potato flakes².

15. Serve while still warm.

¹ I make my own curry powder by mixing the following five spices: 3 parts ground coriander, 1 part turmeric powder, 1 part ground cumin, 1 part ground fenugreek and 1 part ground red chili beans.

² Adding the instant mashed potato flakes turns a very good preparation into a great preparation, especially when using my favorite for step #11 above: green string beans.
