The above prices include the shipping on the laptop, but not the sales tax on the scanner. The total comes to US$187.45.
The scanner plugs into the laptop’s parallel port, and it works perfectly even though the documentation that comes with it says that the host computer has to have a minimum of 16M RAM.
The above setup works on AC, but of course, would not allow you to scan documents in your car. In order for the system to work in my car, I purchased the following add-ons:

4. Car adapter for Visioneer Scanner, US$4.99 (from K-Mart: “Universal 12V DC Auto Plug”)
5. Three-way cigarette lighter socket adapter, US$5.99 (from K-Mart)
The laptop car adapter includes the cost of shipping, but the two items from K-Mart do not include sales tax. After adding the total of the above three items (US$45.98), the grand total comes to US$233.43.
I’ve found that one very useful application for a scanner is to scan in documents which you might need a copy of in the future, such as an important document that might get lost in the mail or that you give to someone who might lose it. If the need for a copy arises, simply print out the scanned image!
